Objective

Seeking a Software Development position with responsibility for Linux and Open Source projects that requires strong technical and communication skills. I am interested in changing the direction of my career from Systems Administration to Software Development. With that goal in mind, I have been enhancing my C programming skills by working on the Linux Kernel and the XFCE desktop. In addition, I've made myself familiar with SVN and GIT for source code control, and with the GTK programming environment. Although I have Senior level communication and team collaboration skills, and have spent much of my Administration career developing useful software tools, I would like to start with an entry-level Software Development position.

Personal Profile

During my 9 years of experience with Linux and Unix systems, I have developed an in-depth and real-world knowledge of the end-to-end operation of Unix servers, with an emphasis on making things more efficient for support organizations, for customers, and for end users. I have a reputation for developing creative tools to improve system operations, working fast without sacrificing quality, communicating concisely and effectively, mentoring and leading others, and setting team standards.

Employment
Experience

Senior I/T Specialist, IBM Global Services (March 2001 – Present)

Working as a Senior Systems Administrator and Tools Developer, managed as many as 1000 servers for several of IBM Global Services' larger clients.

  • Worked closely with customers to identify and fill their business needs.

  • Resolved complex technical and procedural issues.

  • Utilized Open Source products to develop automated tools to report on and remediate audit and security issues, including gathering and tracking detailed information for over 70,000 Unix user accounts.

  • Used Perl, Procmail, and shell scripts to create a suite of monitoring, notification, and reporting tools which enabled System Administrators to effectively manage a large number of servers in an automated fashion. Many of these tools were able to perform simultaneous complex operations in parallel on hundreds of servers at once, which resulted in drastic cost and time savings.

  • Chaired a technical leadership committee with the goal of standardization and stabilization of the servers, and the procedures used to manage them.

  • Collaborated successfully with a large and globally distributed team.

  • Worked to maintain a reliable Unix support infrastructure. Managed a diverse environment, including Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Tru64, and IRIX.

  • Managed storage infrastructure including Brocade switches and IBM Shark storage frames. Used Veritas Volume Manager and Veritas Clustering tools to migrate large amounts of data to and from various storage platforms, including IBM Shark, EMC Symmetrix and Clarion, and local disk arrays. Implemented VCS (Veritas Clustering). Managed a rapidly growing Veritas Netbackup Infrastructure. Installed and configured Cyclades terminal servers.

Unix Systems Administrator, CDI - IBM Global Services Contractor (August 2000 - March 2001)

Performed 24x7 Unix systems administration duties as a contractor (CDI) for the IBM Global Services account at Washington Mutual Bank for approximately 78 Unix servers (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX), supporting a variety of applications, including Oracle, DB2, Sybase, Iplanet, PeopleSoft, Veritas Netbackup, DNS, and DHCP. Developed userid management tool (with user interface) in perl, which was deployed for customer use.

System Support Specialist II and III, University Computing & Networking Services. University of Georgia (September 1998 - May 2000)

Provided 24x7 Unix systems administration and support as a full time salaried staff member. Duties included installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrading, clustering, performance tuning, security, documentation, backup, and recovery of centralized Unix servers with approximately 50,000 users. In addition, provided specialized Unix consulting and support to units, departments and individuals across the campus.

Computer Services Specialist II, University Computing & Networking Services. University of Georgia (February 1997 - March 1998)

As a full time salaried staff member, involved full time in the operation and management of the UCNS HelpDesk, including: processing the majority of E-mail received by the HelpDesk; interviewing, hiring, and training student consultants; administration of a Redhat Linux server; and the design and implementation of a problem management system using the Action Request System, a highly customizable client/server application which runs as a front end to an SQL database. Specific duties included using Perl to automatically import and export client data from various sources on campus to our own in-house database, designing a backup and recovery plan, and the implementation of interfaces for clients to submit service requests directly into the system via E-mail and the World Wide Web. Also, as a technical consultant to University of Georgia faculty, students, and staff, worked with clients to solve and troubleshoot problems encountered in a computing and networking environment.
